Dear Grandma,
A soft gust of wind, the cuckoo’s call, the hummings that filled the air like fragrance. Your voice shouting “Yaaa! Yaaa!” at hawks circling the chicks. The scrape of your broom, the thud of oversized slippers. I saved my words for your hands to hold.
Then the voice note came. That night crawled like a snail. No goodbye. No last prayer. No akpu waiting, no utazi soup, no laughter to run to.
I hiss away the grief, but your love stays. This is my unheard farewell. Adieu, Mama.
